The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Etihad Stadium.
