The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?

For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

Heads Up: The following details significant events for the second part of the final season.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

They watch a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma wasn't just a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is known about his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he fights the control of a sinister presence, much like how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
