The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament Despite Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, even after the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations voiced strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations and City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G fixture between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the stadium.

“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of the match venue,” said a committee representative.

Cultural Background Behind the Objections

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it refused to be associated with celebrations that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s proud history of advocating for equality.
  • An artistic competition is underway to create images celebrating the occasion.
  • Organizers are committed to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the city during the 48-team competition.

The region is home to a significant largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and rich communities representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” organizers added.
