The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been located inside freezers in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for several months, were uncovered on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a false wall in the apartment, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two men, a Austrian man, 55 and his brother aged 53, were detained in June. The older man, a work associate of the Syrian woman, told law enforcement last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected murder.

Informing the media previously, a official for the public prosecutor's office announced the pair were being kept in custody on "high likelihood of intentional killing".

Personal details of those implicated have not been disclosed by police, in following national regulations.

The vanishing of the mother and child was initially flagged by the cousin of the mother, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Police stated the woman's colleague informed them at the time she had embarked on an long journey with her child to see her family in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then found to have been used in foreign locations repeatedly.

But when officers entered the woman's home, her cellphone was located.

A witness also reported overhearing a loud noise in the apartment, and cries of "mum" on the day the pair were presumed to have gone missing.

A wider police investigation was launched, with officers discovering various messages transmitted via the woman's phone—such as a job termination message to her company and messages to the male associate.

Authorities stated a amount in the thousands was also sent to the individual.

Katja Tersch told reporters on Tuesday that a rented space had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a freezing appliance had been placed there.

The two suspects extracted the appliance from the facility on the date the victims disappeared, Tersch stated. And a week later, they purchased a second unit.

Officials say they believe this indicates the demise were premeditated.

"The cause of death remains unclear due to the condition of the remains," the official commented.

A legal representative—of the public prosecutor's office—noted the precise timeline is still unclear, but the remains were professionally hidden and went unnoticed during a prior examination.

While the men were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until 12 November that the elder brother acknowledged an event and to storing the victims. He disputes any intent to kill, officials stated.

At the same time, his brother acknowledged a attempt to hide evidence but disputed awareness of a murder.

The brothers are presently in pre-trial detention in prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister declared the "reported homicide of mother and child... represents the sudden and brutal end of two human lives and exposes a cruel system".

"Female individuals are being murdered due to the simple reality that they are female," they continued.

"Gender-based killings are a strongly established and issue affecting all of society that we must combat firmly."
