We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow. Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing. Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital. We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video. Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were captured. We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
