A trio of officers perished and at least 15 others got wounded in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and one more individual who escaped following the blast was located not long after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene showed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the property was subject to an court order due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the siblings caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast included 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had happened on a floor above the access point and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
