Chelsea's Boss Maresca Describes Pre-Match Period as His 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' at the Club

Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca remarked that the run-up to Saturday's win against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian delivered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game interview even after securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points lifted Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's drought without a win to four outings.

But, when questioned about Gusto's contribution and general display, Maresca surprisingly shared his annoyance over the preceding 48-hour period at the organization.

"How the squad want to develop has been excellent and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with a host of issues, they are doing very well after a difficult week," he stated.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the worst because a lot of people withheld support from us."

Pressed on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City boss added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. In general," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at supporters or the press: "I love the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."

Injury & Suspension Crisis

Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension problems, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.

"I truly commend the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to acknowledge because the effort from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's success over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.

In that timeframe, the Italian had traveled back with his backroom team and players from his native Italy, conducted a training session at Cobham, faced a pre-match press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a victory over an high-flying Everton side.

It was unclear whether any specific press stories had irked him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something deeper from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue related to the club's supporters, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
