Apex Legends' Specialized Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible During This Update

Respawn Entertainment has an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale players, perfectly timed for the holidays. Enthusiasts of the battle royale's super-slick traversal will be pleased to learn that an innovative traversal feature will be introduced when Season 27: Amped goes live on November 4th.

Introducing Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this ability gives players a surge of propulsion when scaling obstacles. As explained key developer the design lead, Mantle Boosting was previously existed of Apex Legends for quite a while, usually referred to as "mantle jumping." However it's challenging for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in competitive play or esports competitions. This season, the team simplifies the process for everyone to execute these tricky speed-boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in Apex for a while, but the movement requires skill to perform and gamers might not realize it's possible without external guides," the designer states. "Now including a visual cue so users can clearly identify the timing to trigger the high-octane traversal skill, making accessible the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to compete for more players."

Why Make It Accessible

Why make a once niche technique available to everyone? Principal designer the development lead explains developers wants players to feel powerful — even those who are inexperienced.

"[The playerbase] is doing advanced techniques like super-glides and tap-strafing, and we looked around at our competition, observed what the community are doing, and we said, 'What if we extend some of this power to more players?'" Mohan clarifies. "Since currently, some of these techniques are kind of janky to access — it requires to change controls and execute within one-frame windows. So we said, 'What if we make a polished version?'"

Season 27 Movement Focus

Mobility is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with characters Horizon, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie receiving enhancements to help keep them mobile. The cooldown period on her tactical ability has been decreased, and this skill will propel users upward faster than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover feature a roof and the ability to provide speed boosts to allies in range. However the spotlight is on the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting significant improvements now, with multiple tweaks applied to make her more potent, faster, and deadlier.

"In my opinion many agree that Valkyrie's time is here," says character developer Ian Holstead. "Certainly she was dominant in the past, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she fell behind in current the game. This presented an ideal chance for us to reexamine a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of restore her to former prominence."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To reclaim her competitive status in current strategies, the developer says Respawn evaluated each of her abilities and implemented significant modifications. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing her speed while airborne, and this equipment now recharge much quicker, enabling her to spend more time aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to mark enemies who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches her entire squad into the air for redeployment or retreat — requires reduced delay to activate. Additionally, she gains recently added perk choices that players can choose to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her rockets, or further speed up her ultimate activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment now delivers on that jet-fighter fantasy," Holstead comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly facelift, with major changes that expands choke points and makes securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. Respawn says Apex Legends this update is all about providing gamers the tools required to keep up with matches.

"Essentially, we were looking at the game's fundamental nature as a movement shooter," says principal designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped launches November 4th at the specified times.
