Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at the Age of 89.

The Oscar-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd has died aged 89.

This star, with credits spanned Chinatown, died at her home in California’s Ojai. This announcement was announced via an announcement by her daughter, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.

Dern, who starred with her mom in a number of films such as Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my amazing hero and my special gift as a mother”, noting that she was present when she passed.

“She was an exceptional grandmother, mother, daughter, star, artist along with caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she expressed. “We were blessed to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”

Initial Roles and Major Success

The start of her career saw supporting roles on television series such as Perry Mason while the seventies had her appearing next to actor Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

That very year, 1974, she appeared with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her role earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.

1980s and Beyond

In the 1980s, she starred in crime thriller Black Widow, a suspense story as well as comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and appeared on the show Alice, a sitcom derived from her earlier movie.

In the subsequent decade, she was given a further supporting actress nomination for her performance in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she played the mom of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The following year she received an additional nod for her role in the film Rambling Rose which also starred Dern.

“This was the film which Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she invited me and Laura to London for a special screening and a party for us,” Ladd shared of Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, grasping our hands, and weeping, watching us perform.”

The nineties also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, featuring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne the movie Citizen Ruth in which she portrayed Dern’s mother once more. Those years also saw her score Emmy nominations for roles in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.

Collaborations with Daughter

She kept appearing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and White’s dark comedy series Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen next to Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.

Subsequent TV appearances consisted of Ray Donovan, a drama plus Young Sheldon.

Filmmaking Ventures

Ladd also wrote and helmed the humorous movie Mrs Munck featuring her and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she said. “It was a privilege to guide him in a film. In fact, I’m the only woman ever to helm a film with her ex. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Family Ties

She happened to be a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a great influence throughout my life”.

Back in 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and informed her life expectancy was six months but she regained full health once her daughter shifted her to a different hospital.

“If you can take your pain and prevent it from festering similar to a wound, instead use it to investigate, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are winning,” Ladd said.
